Vermont Design Institute

Groundswell, a VDI Publication

Vermont Design Institute (VDI) offers a publication entitled Groundswell. It is a 24 page large-format graphic publication focused on community planning and design. Contents include descriptions of design tools for community building, visioning, design charrettes, design review districts, open-space planning, and discussion on defining types of space, principles of sustainability, design vocabulary and geometry. It is both a how-to manual and an inspirational piece.

Vermont Design Institute is a non-profit design collaborative registered with the State of Vermont. Our mission is to promote community problem-solving through more holistic design and planning. We have been in existence for eight years providing community design help to rural towns, offering design conferences and workshops, and producing the VDQ newsletter.

The focus of VDI work, and this Groundswell publication, is on understanding, enhancing, preserving, and healing the built-environment as well as the natural envelope in which we live. Our goal is to help develop more sustainable and ecologically-based patterns of place-making through our work, as well as inspiring others in this venture by means of our publication.
